Walk or Bike San Gabriel’s Historic Trek to Los Angeles

August 25th, 2016

This Saturday, August 27, is San Gabriel’s historic trek to Los Angeles. Whether you come by foot or by bike, you will never forget this 9 mile trek; at only an estimated three hours, you just might beat morning commuters stuck in LA traffic!

In September of 1781, Los Pobladores set out to begin a journey from what is now Mission, San Gabriel, to El Pueblo de Los Ángeles. Their nine-mile journey was immortalized in the creation of Mission Road, which has served the community for years in helping people travel between these two beautiful cities.

If you plan to walk the Historic Trek to Los Angeles, be at Plaza Park by 6 in the morning; if you prefer to cycle, the trek doesn’t start for you until 7:30. Be aware that children under the age of 12, or anyone who does not plan on biking with a helmet, will not be allowed to bike the trek.

The fun doesn’t end with the walk! Once you’ve made it to El Pueblo Historic Monument at Olvera Street, there will be wholesome family fun for everyone. Celebrate and discover the history of Los Pobladores with presentations and museums, grab a bite to eat, or hang out and enjoy kid-friendly activities. When you’re ready to head back to San Gabriel, don’t worry, you don’t have to walk all the way back! Complimentary bus service will be provided to participants of the Walk to Los Angeles.

As you’re walking from San Gabriel to Los Angeles, take a moment to look around you. It’s difficult to enjoy the true beauty of Southern California and the journey from San Gabriel to Los Angeles from behind a windshield. Aside from learning and experiencing the history of San Gabriel, by completing this walk you are allowing yourself to appreciate the beauty we all too often drive by without a second thought. Take the time to discover details about Mission Road that you never have before as you bask in the sun on this journey to LA.

Arroyo Walk Community Spotlight

August 23rd, 2016

The historic Mission District of San Gabriel has long been a sought-after district among homebuyers. Arroyo Walk is the newest addition to this picturesque community, with 31 townhomes starting in the $500’s. Arroyo Walk is truly bringing a breath of fresh air to the storied Mission District!

One of the primary reasons that people are so eager to purchase homes in the Mission District, aside from the rich culture and history the area boasts, is the schools. Parents can rest assured that their children are getting a good education at Coolidge Elementary and Gabrielino High Schools, both of which scored 9/10 on the 2013 Statewide Academic Performance Index. Even if you don’t have school aged children, owning a home in such a prestigious school district is advantageous, as good schools lead to high property values.

Arroyo Walk is a serene new community, a relaxing retreat from the harsh noise of the city. The Arroyo Walk aesthetic is a careful blend of modernity and classic Spanish architectural style that is bound to catch the eye and inspire the muse in anyone. Living in Arroyo Walk is living in comfort, as every home is tailored to be warm and welcoming from the minute you step foot inside the door. Strolling through Arroyo Walk, it will not be an uncommon sight to see two neighbors relaxing under gorgeous oak trees during the day or huddling by a fire roasting s’mores at night.

The Mission District of San Gabriel is one of the most beautiful communities in the Los Angeles Metroplex, and certainly one of the most historic. Every building has a story to tell, and the district’s noble history is engraved into the culture that has grown around it.

There is never a dull day to be had in San Gabriel, with high-end shopping, movies, and entertainment only minutes from Arroyo Walk, not to mention the many options for gourmet dining the area offers. Exploring all that San Gabriel has to offer will be a hefty task, and when you’ve done that, there’s still more: Pasadena is just down the road with even more fun venues!

If you have been thinking about moving to the Los Angeles area, but haven’t decided where, we at Olson Homes highly recommend you take the time to explore the beautiful, historic Mission District of San Gabriel. 13th Annual Gardena Jazz Festival

August 18th, 2016

It’s that time of year again: time for the 13th Annual Gardena Jazz Festival! You don’t want to miss this yearly celebration of syncopation, one of Gardena’s most beloved traditions. Groove with the city of Gardena all day Sunday, August 28th!

The Gardena Jazz Festival was first held in 2003, at which time it was not nearly as grand as it is today, but was still beloved by attendees. Since then, the festival has grown into one of the City’s most popular events, pulling the entire community in for a full day of fun! Bask in the sun in front of the stage or huddle with friends under one of the many tents you can rent for the day; whatever you do, just have fun with it.

This year’s fest include the likes of singer and saxophonist Rick Parma, eight-time Grammy nominated Gerald Albright, and, of course, the Long Beach Polytechnic High School Jazz Group, among many others. Pack a picnic lunch or chow down on food from one of the many local vendors present at the Gardena Jazz Fest, and make it a family event.

Come for the Jazz, and stay for the community bonding. Despite being a large city in the context of an even larger city, Gardena manages to maintain a local, down home vibe, where neighbors care about your well-being, and everyone gets along just fine. Events like these are perfect for getting everyone together and not only enjoying some good jazz, but more importantly enjoying each other’s company. The annual Jazz Festival is one of the best ways you can get to know the city of Gardena.

Civic Theater Under the Stars Presents Grease!

August 4th, 2016

Travel back to 1959 Friday and Saturday nights in August with the Civic Theater Under the Stars in Buena Park, California, for their production of Grease. If you haven’t already made plans to see it, now is the time to do so! You won’t want to miss the Civic Theater’s inspired performance of this classic, award-winning musical!
First performed in 1972, Grease has since become one of the most well-known musicals of the last century, thanks largely in part to the 1978 film of the same name starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. A celebration of the spirit and music of the 1950’s, as well as a depiction of timeless High School love, rebellion, and peer pressure, it’s no wonder that Grease has become so popular.

If you only know Grease from the movie, you simply have to see a live production. The Civic Theater Under the Stars is a very talented group of local Buena Park performers sponsored by the City of Buena Park Community Services Department Fine Arts Division.

Buena Park is a city with a very active arts scene. There is always a community gathering in Buena Park where you can discover local artists, actors, or musicians, and fall in love with their work. This production of Grease is just one of the many ways to explore local fine arts culture in Buena Park.

Tickets for Grease are $16 for adults, $13 for seniors, and $11 for children 12 and under. Come on out to The Plaza at Ehlers Event Centers on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:15 for a performance you won’t forget! More information on this fun musical event is available at:

The city of Buena Park is a picturesque and welcoming community that so many people are proud to call home. Cultural events like these are just the tip of the iceberg of what makes Buena Park such an outstanding place to live. With over 80,000 people in the city of Buena Park, however, living in such a large urban community can often feel isolating. That is why we at Olson Homes have built Aldea Walk. Aldea is Spanish for “small village;” step one foot inside of Aldea Walk and you will understand where the name comes from. Living in Aldea Walk is like living in a small town with all of the excitement and conveniences that come from living in Buena Park. While you’re in Buena Park for Grease, why not schedule a tour of an Aldea Walk home:
