2017 Father’s Day 5K

June 15th, 2017

In 1977, Rick Hoyt, a young man with Cerebral Palsy, participated in a 5k race for the benefit of a lacrosse player recently paralysed in an accident. Though confined to a wheelchair, Rick was able to participate with the help of his father, Dick Hoyt, who pushed Rick for the length of the race. That night, Rick told his father that participating in the race made him feel free from his Cerebral Palsy, and the father-son team started off a lifetime of participating in marathons in this manner.

Rick Hoyt and his parents worked hard during the boy’s youth to shatter stereotypes as well as legal restrictions placed on children with disabilities, with Rick’s participation in various marathons being one example of their efforts. The Hoyt Foundation was established in 1989 to provide educational opportunities to people living with disabilities and help them to take active roles in their communities.

In honor of Dick and Rick Hoyt, the Moon Joggers are holding the World’s Best Dad 5k, open for anyone to participate. As a virtual race, you chose your course, time, and speed, and for a registration fee of only $17 you will receive a medal and a bib for your efforts – for this race, you can even opt to receive a second medal in honor of your father. 15% of each entry will be donated to The Hoyt Foundation.

The World’s Best Dad 5k, without a set course, is a great opportunity to run through the city of Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley explore all of the scenic views and cultural hotspots that Pasadena has to offer. If Father’s Day doesn’t work for you, the race is running all week, so you can chose anytime to explore the area. Grab a friend, a dad, or the whole family for a serene jog through the streets of Pasadena, or along the majestic San Gabriel mountain range.
