8th Annual VidCon

June 22nd, 2017

It’s that time of year again:  time for the 8th annual VidCon in Anaheim, California! This four day event celebrates the virtual communities created via YouTube, bringing content creators and fans together for concerts, panels, and even a day at Disneyland! Whether you’re there for a crash course in online video production or a chance to meet your favorite creators, VidCon offers something for the whole family.

In 2010, VidCon was started by Hank Green of VlogBrothers, a channel co-run by Hank and his brother John Green, best-selling author of The Fault in Our Stars, as a place for vloggers, or video bloggers, to network and learn from one another, as well as for the communities that were starting to crop up around them to have a place to gather in person. In the past seven years, as YouTube has seen a boom in popularity, VidCon has grown from an event that attracted just under 1,500 people in the basement of a Hyatt hotel to a major conference in the Anaheim Convention Center, bringing in upwards of 25,500 people in 2016.

Major stars in attendance this year include Dan Howell and Phil Lester, Lilly Singh of IISuperwomanII, and Mark Fishbach of Markiplier. There are two main tracks for attendees: the community track and the creator track, both of which offer an opportunity to see these stars and others in person. The community track is for fans and casual convention goers looking to meet their favorite creators or attend concerts, shows, and fan meet-ups, while the latter is for those interested in the creation of online video and growing one’s social media presence, whether for business or for personal pursuit. VidCon culminates on Sunday in Disney Day, in which for a discounted price, guests can join the VidCon community for a day at Disneyland.

VidCon is a wonderful chance to expand your horizons, meet up and coming online celebrities, and, for families with children who have grown up with YouTube, a perfect opportunity for family bonding that everyone can enjoy. Read more about this year’s VidCon at: http://vidcon.com/.

2017 Father’s Day 5K

June 15th, 2017

In 1977, Rick Hoyt, a young man with Cerebral Palsy, participated in a 5k race for the benefit of a lacrosse player recently paralysed in an accident. Though confined to a wheelchair, Rick was able to participate with the help of his father, Dick Hoyt, who pushed Rick for the length of the race. That night, Rick told his father that participating in the race made him feel free from his Cerebral Palsy, and the father-son team started off a lifetime of participating in marathons in this manner.

Rick Hoyt and his parents worked hard during the boy’s youth to shatter stereotypes as well as legal restrictions placed on children with disabilities, with Rick’s participation in various marathons being one example of their efforts. The Hoyt Foundation was established in 1989 to provide educational opportunities to people living with disabilities and help them to take active roles in their communities.

In honor of Dick and Rick Hoyt, the Moon Joggers are holding the World’s Best Dad 5k, open for anyone to participate. As a virtual race, you chose your course, time, and speed, and for a registration fee of only $17 you will receive a medal and a bib for your efforts – for this race, you can even opt to receive a second medal in honor of your father. 15% of each entry will be donated to The Hoyt Foundation.

The World’s Best Dad 5k, without a set course, is a great opportunity to run through the city of Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley explore all of the scenic views and cultural hotspots that Pasadena has to offer. If Father’s Day doesn’t work for you, the race is running all week, so you can chose anytime to explore the area. Grab a friend, a dad, or the whole family for a serene jog through the streets of Pasadena, or along the majestic San Gabriel mountain range.

Register now for the World’s Best Dad 5k at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2017-fathers-day-5k-pasadena-registration-33176262093.

The San Gabriel Valley is one of the most beautiful areas in Southern California, with Temple City, a short drive from Pasadena and a shorter drive to the San Gabriel Mountains, showing off a slice of everything that the valley has to offer, both in terms of urban conveniences and natural beauty. Blossom Walk is a quickly growing neighborhood of newly built homes in the heart of Temple City. Explore Blossom Walk today at: http://blossomwalkhomes.com/.
