The 2017 Surf City Marathon and Half-Marathon Event

February 2nd, 2017

SurfCityLogoResidents and visitors of Huntington Beach have a chance to join thousands of other runners this Sunday at the annual Surf City Marathon. The oceanfront course will take you along the beaches of Southern California’s Pacific Coast Highway heading north, then it weaves its way through the town of Huntington Beach and through Huntington Central Park. After coming back to the Pacific Coast Highway, runners can observe all the surfers along the Bolsa Chica State Beach. This is a long stretch of uninterrupted beachfront, an ideal home for a winter marathon.

The Surf City Marathon is considered to be one of the best race events in the country, and thousands of families come to enjoy this incredible and rewarding annual tradition. This race is well known for being scenic and flat, as runners come from all around to experience this exciting run. This year marks the 21st anniversary and welcomes runners from many different locales. Last year, this certified event saw more than 18,000 runners, as well as many wheelchair competitors, pass through the finish line.

In addition to the full marathon, the event also includes half marathon as well as a health and safety expo at the beach. Due to the size of the fields the race often attracts, organizers uses a wave start to start the runners off, where waves leave the starting line every three minutes. This year, the first wave will start at 7:45 AM, and it will take more than a half hour to send off all the waves of the runners.
